At first, our software was not intended to be a commercial product. It started as an idea during the pandemic for Watercooler, a platform similar to Clubhouse for companies. When Clubhouse chose Agora to power their audio streaming, we followed suit. However, when Pinterest expressed interest in a 500 seat trial, we were told to find an alternative to Agora for security reasons. This led us to explore open source options, but we found that there was a lack of modern, end-to-end WebRTC stacks with good mobile support. In a desperate attempt, I reached out to my friend David for help. Together, we created LiveKit, an open source WebRTC stack in Go that I could use for Watercooler and release for others to use. In July 2021, we officially launched LiveKit, which quickly became the fastest growing WebRTC repository on GitHub with hundreds of projects using it in a short period of time. However, through conversations with developers, we realized that while many found success with LiveKit, others struggled with managing their own media infrastructure or wanted to focus more on their product rather than infrastructure.
